DRY NEEDLING
Muscle tightness and trigger points can limit movement, affect performance, and contribute to ongoing pain. Dry needling is a safe, evidence-based treatment that helps address these underlying issues so you can move more freely and recover more effectively. When combined with a personalized physical therapy program, dry needling can be a powerful tool to reduce pain, improve function, and help you get back to living, working, and performing at your best.
WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING?
Dry needling is a skilled treatment technique performed by specially trained physical therapists to relieve muscle pain, reduce tension, and improve movement. Using thin, sterile needles, your therapist targets tight or irritated muscles, known as trigger points, to help decrease pain, improve circulation, and restore normal muscle function. Unlike injections, no medication is used during dry needling.
Dry needling is often combined with therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and movement retraining to address the underlying cause of pain and promote long-term recovery. Many patients experience improved mobility and decreased pain after treatment, allowing them to return to daily activities more comfortably.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT
Before beginning treatment, your therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether dry needling is appropriate for your condition. During the procedure, thin, sterile needles are inserted into targeted muscles or trigger points. You may experience a brief muscle twitch or mild aching sensation, which is a normal response and often indicates the muscle is relaxing.
Treatment may also include:
-
Therapeutic exercise
-
Manual therapy
-
Stretching and mobility exercises
-
Postural and movement education
-
Strengthening programs
-
Home exercise recommendations
Some patients notice immediate improvement, while others experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours before feeling relief.

IS DRY NEEDLING RIGHT FOR YOU?
Dry needling is a highly effective treatment for many people, but it is not appropriate for every patient or every condition. Your physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether dry needling is a safe and beneficial option based on your symptoms, medical history, medications, and treatment goals. Certain individuals, including those with specific medical conditions, bleeding disorders, needle phobias, active infections, or other contraindications, may not be candidates for dry needling. If dry needling is not the best choice for your care, your therapist will recommend other evidence-based treatment techniques designed to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
